My journey into counseling

There has always been a need for one individual to empathetically listen to another in times of hardship, grief, and loss. Many of us are led to succeed in life through the guidance and encouragement of someone we trust. We are born a blank slate. Some of us are blessed with loving, supportive parents, others are burdened with parents unable to focus on loving and caring for their children, and instead ignore, abuse, demean, and abandon. As Erickson in his "stages of change" calls stage 1 "trust vs mistrust," my job is to help abused individuals trust again.

My unique approach to healing

I am an older clinician with a relaxed and, when possible, a funny side. If I help the client relax and calm themselves, that is the key to helping a client connect with what Bradshaw called "the (wounded) inner child." The focus of therapy is to identify early life influences and learned behaviors stored in the subconscious mind that lead to problems. The subconscious mind is programmed from infancy with positive and negative beliefs, and positive or negative coping skills, and survival skills. The goal is to replace self-destructive beliefs, habits, and behaviors, and replace them with pro-social behaviors.

Rewarding challenges and client connections

When I am able to help the client recognize that their beliefs may be creating problems in their lives, that is rewarding. Helping a couple understand that a relationship needs four foundational pillars to succeed. They are trust, respect, communication, and forgiveness. This is a very challenging task! I specialize in trauma issues such as physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, anger issues, domestic violence, relationship and communication issues. Clinical and behavioral issues include anxiety/depression, mood disorders, drug/alcohol/compulsive behaviors.

"Vince helped me navigate difficult times with compassion and insight. His approach truly made a difference in my life."
